Former England and Manchester City star Danny Mills has urged Arsenal to make a controversial move for Danny Rose if they fail in their pursuit of Kieran Tierney.

Unai Emery identified Tierney as his number one left-back target at the start of the summer and Arsenal are reportedly confident of signing the 22-year-old Celtic star.

While Celtic rejected Arsenal’s two opening bids for Tierney, the Gunners are now understood to be closing in on an agreement after restructuring their £25million offer for the Scotland international.

Tierney has told Celtic that he’s eager to play in the Premier League next season and the Scottish champions are increasingly resigned to losing their prized possession.

If Arsenal do not manage to get a deal over the line for Tierney, Mills believes they should explore a move for Tottenham’s Rose who is actively looking for a new club this summer.

‘He’ll want to play football and he’ll want to be first choice,’ the former right-back told Football Insider.

‘You’ve got the Euros coming up next year, if he’s not playing that jeopardises his chances of making the Euros squad. It could be his last international tournament.

‘If Arsenal can’t get Tierney, would they take Danny Rose? They should do.

‘The Arsenal-Tottenham thing is of course always going to be an issue but they would take him.

‘Manchester City, he’s probably a little bit old for the demographic they’re trying to bring in. Manchester United, Liverpool – they’re okay. Chelsea can’t sign him.

‘Realistically, in terms of where he would want to go, they’d be up there challenging, in and around, what other London clubs could afford him?’

Rose did not travel with the rest of Tottenham’s squad on their pre-season tour of Asia, but Mauricio Pochettino insists the Englishman remains in his plans for the time being.

‘I told you in Singapore and China. I think I was very clear about the situation of the squad,’ Pochettino said.

‘Danny Rose like another 25 or 26 players are here and are my players.

‘I don’t know what I need to say because I was very clear in the past.’
