Arsenal set to hugely increase Aouar transfer offer after Lyon decision

Arsenal are set to significantly increase their offer for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar according to our colleagues at football.london.

The Gunners saw their first offer for the 22-year-old rejected out of hand on Friday, with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas – one of the toughest negotiators in the transfer market – even taking to Twitter to confirm that the Gunners had come up short.

Aouar has now been included in Lyon’s squad to take on Lorient in Ligue 1 on Sunday, and as far as Aulas is concerned that means he will be staying at the club.

Aulas tweeted: “For Houssem, Arsenal is too far from his value: we are counting on him to play a great match in Lorient and lead OL in CL (Champions League) next year.”

Arsenal have reportedly gone back in for Aouar

That statement hasn’t deterred Arsenal from bidding for his services though, and it is claimed that the Gunners are ready to come back with an offer than could see them eventually pay around £14.5million more for Aouar than they had originally intended.

The football.london report states that the Gunners’ new bid for Aouar will come in the form of an initial £36.5million, followed by a potential further £9million in add-ons.

These could be triggered should Aouar succeed with the Gunners and even if he ends up winning personal awards.

Aulas is a fierce negotiator

Lyon are said to value Aouar even higher than that though, with Aulas – who has a long history of dealing with English clubs and managed to delay Arsenal’s signing of Alexandre Lacazette for a year in 2016 – hoping for an offer closer to £55million.

However, as football comes to terms with the financial impact of the pandemic then Lyon could be willing to deal at a slightly lower fee.

Would Aouar be a good signing? Have your say here.
