Arsenal put Mesut Ozil up for sale as Unai Emery attempts to offload German flop

Arsenal are attempting to offload Mesut Oil, according to reports.

Italian outlet Calcio Mercato claim the Gunners want to sell the German midfielder because he does not fit into manager Unai Emery’s plans.

Ozil moved to the Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in September 2013 but he has struggled to cement his place in the starting XI over recent years.

The 30-year-old has started just one Premier League match this season and was included in a youthful side which beat Nottingham Forest 5-0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Calcio Mercato add the 2014 World Cup winner has attracted interest from clubs in Turkey, China and America.

However, there have yet to be any official approaches.

Arsenal’s academy manager and former skipper Per Mertesacker spoke out last week revealing why Ozil has not started many matches this season.

“I hope Mesut can get fit,” said Mertesacker. “Unai requires a certain fitness level.

“Unai is fair to everyone. You need to deliver a certain fitness level – then you are available to play.

“Unai tries to get through to him. He talks to him. He says: ‘You need to train to a certain level every day – I need you to be fit – otherwise you are not going to play.’

“That’s what I’ve seen. He puts him in the squad but then leaves him on the bench. If he trains to the level that’s required, he can play.

“Personally, I’m in favour of that. When Mesut is fit, he is one of our best players. He needs to be in there. We need to build the team around him and make him stronger.”

Arsenal have had a turbulent start to the new season but sit fourth in the table.

The Gunners have won three of their opening six games and take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday.
