Arsenal press conference live as Unai Emery discusses Granit Xhaka captaincy

Emery facing backlash

Unai Emery is facing a dressing room revolt for failing to back Granit Xhaka after he was booed off the pitch by Arsenal fans on Sunday, according to reports.

The Switzerland international responded badly to supporters initially cheering ironically when his number was called before booing. It seems fans were frustrated the club captain wasn’t getting off the pitch quickly enough in a game they weren’t winning and made their frustration known.

Xhaka began by cupping his ears, shouting “f*** off” and removing his Arsenal shirt before storming down the tunnel.

According to The Sun, Arsenal launched a disciplinary following the incident, with Emery phoning Xhaka and asking him to apologise to the fans.

Xhaka is allegedly unprepared to do this and is facing being stripped of the captaincy.

The report adds that the midfielder’s Arsenal team-mates are unhappy with the treatment Xhaka received from the fans and believe the manager should have backed him publicly.
