Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira ‘hopes’ Bruno Fernandes enjoys his move to Manchester United and adapts quickly to the demands of the Premier League.

Torreira shared a dressing room with new Red Devils signing Fernandes, 25, while the pair were both at Italian club Sampdoria.

While Torreira left Serie A to join Arsenal in the summer of 2018, Fernandes joined Sporting a year earlier and is now set to sign for Manchester United in a deal worth up to £68m.

Fernandes will fly to the UK on Wednesday evening to complete his transfer and Arsenal rival Torreira has wished his former team-mate well at Old Trafford.

‘I really hope he adapts quickly, particularly as the Premier League is so physical and intense as a championship,’ Torreira told Sky Sports when asked about Fernandes’ move.

‘I’m sure he has the right mentality to adapt quickly. Obviously he’s joining a big club in Manchester United so I hope he enjoys the move.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer identified Fernandes as his priority transfer target for January but United’s pursuit of the midfielder looked set to end in failure as Sporting refused to lower their demands.

But the Premier League giants finally reached an agreement with Sporting on Wednesday and are expected to unveil Fernandes at Old Trafford in the next 24 hours.

Manchester United are currently fifth in the Premier League, having won just nine of their 24 league games this term, and face Wolves on Saturday.

The January transfer window closes on Friday and United are also being linked with late moves for youngsters Nathan Bishop and Jude Bellingham.
