Ian Wright led the plaudits for Arsenal striking sensation Gabriel Martinelli following his record breaking full Premier League debut last night.

Freddie Ljungberg’s side were staring down the barrel of another damaging defeat when Angelo Ogbonna headed West Ham into the lead shortly before half-time at the London Stadium.

Arsenal had failed to win any of their last nine matches in all competitions but were rescued by the teenager, who was making his first top flight start.

Martinelli drew his side level on the hour mark, converting Sead Kolasinac’s cross, before Nicolas Pepe put the visitors ahead with a superb curling effort from just inside the penalty area six minutes later.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang secured Arsenal’s first three-point haul in over two months, capping a spectacular nine-minute goalscoring spree with a well taken volley following Pepe’s dinked cross.

It was Martinelli, however, who drew praise from club legend Wright having become the youngest player to score on their Premier League debut for Arsenal.

‘Brilliant debut Gabs,’ wrote Wright on Instagram. ‘Only the start for you!’

The 18-year-old signed in the summer from Ituano and had already signalled his potential with seven goals this term in the Carabao Cup and Europa League.

‘Gabi is a fantastic player, very, very young, but he has that energy about him and he goes and he goes,’ said interim head coach Ljungberg in his post match press conference.

‘There is no fear and he just keeps on going. It is a pleasure to see him on the pitch and for him to get the success he did, it puts a smile on your face.’
