The BT Sport commentary cut out just one minute into Valencia’s Europa League semi-final second leg clash with Arsenal on Thursday night.
And what followed was a very awkward five-minute patch-up job as BT presenter Jake Humphrey and pundits Martin Keown and John Hartson attempted to fill the silence until commentator Ian Darke and Robbie Savage returned.
To be fair to the trio they did a good job thinking on their feet and giving their opinion on what Arsenal need to do in this tie.
But fans couldn’t help but react to the excruciating exchange as the threesome attempted to commentate on the match from the comfort of the BT Sport studio.
“This BT Sport commentary is so awkward,” wrote one viewer on Twitter, while another added: “This commentary is like watching Gogglebox.”
A third wrote: “Hartson and Keown filling in on commentary, very much demonstrating the need for a play by play commentator.”
And a fourth concluded: “Awkward Martin Keown and John Hartson commentary.”
Eventually normal service resumed with Darke and Savage returning and getting back to work.
Commenting on what happened, Darke joked: “Someone forgot to put the 10 pence in the metre!” before explaining that a power cut wiped out all commentary transmissions.
