Arsenal fans made their feelings known towards error-prone centre-half Shkodran Mustafi known after he was brought on as a second half substitute against Lyon.

The Germany international was signed from Valencia for £35million in the summer of 2016 but he has been an unmitigated disaster.

Reports earlier this summer claimed Arsenal had attempted to sell the former Sampdoria defender in almost every transfer window since his arrival, but the Gunners have found no takers for the 27-year-old.

Arsenal confirmed the signing of William Saliba from Saint-Etienne earlier this week but the teenager will return to the Ligue 1 club for the whole of next season.

With club captain Laurent Koscielny effectively on strike, Arsenal remain in desperate need of defensive reinforcements and the sight of Mustafi entering the fray in the 70th minute was met with loud boos.

Lyon had equalised moments earlier through a terrific Moussa Dembele header and the former Fulham striker turned the game on its head 10 minutes later with Mustafi badly at fault, allowing the French striker a clear run on goal having attempted to play him offside.

Unai Emery’s defensive problems increased soon after when Ainsley Maitlaind-Niles, who was likely to deputise at right-back until Hector Bellerin returns from full fitness, was forced off with a foot injury.
