Arsenal face Bruno Guimaraes battle as Lyon 'open transfer talks'


Arsenal face competition from Lyon in the race to sign Bruno Guimaraes after the Ligue 1 club reportedly opened talks over a January transer.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old midfielder, who currently plays for Athletico Paranaense in his home country.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is reportedly set to hold talks with Guimaraes’ representatives in London early this week, with Benfica believed to have already made a bid.

But now Lyon’s sporting director Juninho has also opened discussions over Guimaraes, according to L’Équipe via Get Football News France .

The publication says Lyon are targeting Guimaraes as a potential replacement for Lucas Tousert, who could be about to join Hertha Berlin.

The French club are hoping to sign Guimaraes in the January transfer window, but would be keen to wrap up a deal for a summer move if the transfer cannot be completed by end of this month.

Guimaraes is captain of Brazil’s 2020 Olympics team, who are currently participating in a qualification tournament in Colombia for this summer’s competition.

According to Goal , Athletico Paranaense are looking for a fee between £21million and £25m for Guimaraes, who made 35 appearances in all competitions for the Brazilian side last season.

It has also been claimed that the club have rejected an offer of around £17m plus add-ons from Benfica.

Asked about the reported bid from the Portuguese club, Paranaense chief Mario Celso Petraglia told O Jogo: “Yes it’s true. Yesterday came the official offer from Benfica to sign Bruno Guimaraes.

“Let’s study Benfica’s offer. On Monday we will meet the club board to assess this situation.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his defence this month after it was confirmed that Calum Chambers will miss the rest of the season with a knee problem.

The Gunners are thought to be interested in PSG left-back Layvin Kurzawa, who has changed agents amid links of a move to the Emirates Stadium.
