Arsenal eye Real Madrid's Luka Jovic amid Aubameyang transfer uncertainty

Mikel Arteta is eyeing a transfer for Real Madrid flop Luka Jovic amid the uncertainty over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future.

Despite posting a prolific campaign for Eintracht Frankfurt last season, Jovic has struggled since arriving at Madrid in the summer.

The Serbian international has found the back of the net just twice for the Los Blancos, and Madrid are now reportedly prepared to cash-in on the forward.

That has alerted Arteta, who is keen on making a move for Jovic should Madrid put him up for sale, reports The Star.

The 22-year-old has shown all the qualities to convince Arteta he could play the lead striker role at Arsenal.

With Aubameyang still stalling over a new contract, Arteta knows he may be forced into losing his captain at the end of the season.

Arsenal would rather sell the 31-year-old this year for a fee rather than lose him for nothing when his current deal expires next summer.

Arteta would look to reinvest that cash into signing Jovic, who could be available for around £50million.

The Gunners would face competition for Jovic’s services however, with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham also monitoring his situation at the Bernabeu.

Chelsea expressed an interest before Frankfurt sold him to Madrid for £60m, but were in the middle of a transfer ban and could not compete for his signature.

Blues boss Frank Lampard is targeting attacking reinforcements when the window reopens, with Olivier Giroud expected to depart Stamford Bridge, leaving Tammy Abraham as the only recognised striker.

Tottenham are also in the market for a frontman, having struggled to fill the void left by Harry Kane’s injury.

Jovic’s future at Madrid has been thrown further into uncertain territory after he angered club chiefs for breaking quarantine rules in his native Serbia.

Madrid allowed him to fly home amid the coronavirus pandemic.

But Jovic then broke a mandatory self-isolation protocol to attend his girlfriend’s birthday party, and has since had to issue a formal apology.
