And they could well be without Champions League football unless they complete a miraculous turnaround in the second half of the Premier League season.

The Gunners have looked into a move for Chris Smalling, but the Manchester United defender is on loan at Roma and is unlikely to leave.

According to reports in Germany, they would be able to sign Jerome Boateng for free if they pick up the tab on his £196,000-a-week wages.

But Bayern Munich manager Hans-Dieter Flick denied this on Monday, saying that Boateng is one of his players.

Last summer’s January transfer window was a minor disaster as Barcelona’s Denis Suarez arrived in North London and was generally terrible.

Arteta also has an injury issue in defence, with Rob Holding slowly coming back to fitness, while Calum Chambers is out for around nine months with an ACL injury.

An Arsenal investment that will come through over the summer is William Saliba, who the Gunners have already bought off Saint-Etienne, then loaned him back to the Ligue 1 side for the season.
