Carlo Ancelotti has been dismissed as manager of Napoli, on the same evening he led the club into the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Italian side hammered Genk 4-0 on Tuesday evening, with Arkadiusz Milik scoring a hat-trick, but it was not enough for Ancelotti to keep hold of his job.

The victory over the Belgian side was Napoli’s first victory in 10 matches, in all competitions, amid a torrid run of form that has left the side seventh in Serie A.

A club statement read: ‘Napoli has decided to revoke the role of manager of the first team from Mr. Carlo Ancelotti.

‘The relations of friendship, esteem and mutual respect between the club, its president Aurelio De Laurentiis and Carlo Ancelotti remain intact.’

Napoli only lost two of those previous nine games, drawing seven of them, but as they are already 17 points off league leaders Inter Milan, the board chose to act.

The timing is slightly odd, as Ancelotti could have done little more than secure a 4-0 win in his final game in charge.

However, Sky Sport Italia report that the decision was made before the thrashing of Genk.

Even before he lost his job at the San Paolo, Ancelotti was being linked with both the Everton and Arsenal jobs, with both sides looking for a new manager.

Now he is available without a compensation fee, he will become an even more attractive option for both Premier League teams.

Immediately following the news of his dismissal in Naples, the odds have been slashed on him taking over as the next permanent manager of Everton and of Arsenal.

As for Napoli, reports had already suggested that they were lining up former AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso as Ancelotti’s replacement and he is expected to be offered the job in the near future.

Ancelotti is one of the most decorated managers in the world, having won the Champions League with AC Milan (twice) and Real Madrid.

He has also won the league titles in Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany after other spells with Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich.
