Arsenal aim dig at Liverpool on social media over 'Invincibles' status

Arsenal aimed a dig at Liverpool by changing the name of the club’s Twitter account ahead of a documentary on ‘The Invincibles’.

With football currently suspended amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Gunners are to show a film on the club’s website and app about Arsene Wenger’s famous side who went the entire season unbeaten to win the 2003/4 Premier League title.

That Arsenal went on to set a record for the longest unbeaten run in the top flight – which many expected Liverpool to beat this season.

But a surprise defeat at Watford in February ended the sequence for Jurgen Klopp’s side on 44 games – five short of the record set by the Gunners in 2004.

As part of that run, Arsenal won 26 of their 38 matches in the 2003-04 Premier League campaign, drawing the other 12 as they claimed the title 11 points clear of second-placed Chelsea.

And as they prepare to air the documentary on that historic season, the Gunners cryptically changed the name on their Twitter account to ‘Arsena’.

One fan was on the ball and quickly realised the last letter had been dropped because Arsenal ‘didn’t take an L’ during the Invincibles season.

And when he tweeted his observation back, the club simply replied with a knowing wink emoji.

Arsenal clearly dominated the Premier League that season, but it turned out to be the last time they won the title – although they have won four FA Cups since.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are still waiting for their first top-flight crown in 30 years after the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Klopp’s side are a whopping 25 points clear of Manchester City, having won 27 of their 29 games so far this season.

Apart from Watford, the only other team to have taken points off Liverpool this term was their fierce rivals Manchester United, who held the Reds to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in October.

Liverpool need just two wins to seal a first championship since 1990 – and will hope the Premier League season can resume again soon so they can put the title dearth behind them.
