We haven’t seen the last of Orm in the DC movie universe. Patrick Wilson has confirmed that Arthur Curry’s brother will factor into Aquaman 2, but exactly how he’s going to be utilized remains to be seen. Wilson was the main antagonist in the first movie, pitted against Jason Momoa’s titular, water-dwelling hero. Will it be a full-on rematch the second time around? Or will director James Wan come up with something a little more unexpected?
Patrick Wilson has been promoting his new movie Midway as of late. During a recent interview, he was asked about Aquaman 2. At this point, given that the movie is still nearly three years away, not much can be said. However, Wilson did say that he’s been in touch with director James Wan about it. Here’s what he had to say.
“(Laughs.) Yeah! I’m slightly briefed. Of course, I want to know everything, but I also have a great respect for him and the process to know that I’m OK staying out of it until it’s late in the game. Sometimes, there’s so much information that I don’t ask because I don’t want to know, and I don’t want him to go, ‘I can’t tell you that yet.’ I just throw a little dart here and there. I’ll say, ‘So, what about this?’ and he’ll say, ‘Well, this is what I’m thinking.’ But, we talk a lot.”
Similar to how Loki has been Thor’s main nemesis, as well as his brother, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the dynamic between Aquaman and Orm, aka Ocean Master, looks to be heading in a similar direction. Interestingly, Black Manta, as portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is also set to return for the sequel and was positioned as the big bad via the first movie’s post-credit scene. So are we just going to have another go-around with the same villains, just with a bit of a dynamic shift? For now, we have more questions than answers.
What we know for sure is that Arthur took his rightful place as king of Atlantis at the end of the first movie. Orm was bested and undoubtedly bitter. All we know for sure is that Jason Momoa recently teased that Aquaman 2 will be even bigger than its predecessor, which is truly saying something considering how massive in scope the first movie was. Speaking a bit further, Patrick Wilson corroborated Momoa’s previous comments.
“It’s funny, when I think about the answers that I gave you at the beginning of this and always pushing myself forward, even in the same genre, that’s James to a T. I can tell you that even his concepts for Aquaman 2 are pushing it even further. Whatever that means. I have a few ideas of where Orm fits in, but I’m not gonna talk about them.”
For now at least, we’re left with vague details. Aquaman went on to become a bigger than expected hit, grossing $1.14 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing DC movie of all time. Aside from Patrick Wilson and Jason Momoa, Amber Heard is also set to reprise her role as Mera. Aquaman 2 is currently set to hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
