Forge has ended up with one of the shortest careers ever in video games, as he’s already been replaced by even newer character Revenant.
If you were a bit disappointed by the 90s stylings of cyborg MMA star Forge, who looked just like he’d stepped off the cover of a Mega Drive game, you may be relieved to know he’s already dead.
Forge was only introduced last week, with the promise that he’d be added to the game on 4 February, but the new Apex Legends trailer last night rather surprisingly shows him being brutally murdered by Revenant.
Given that, it’s hard to take anything at face value now but Forge’s character bio has been greyed out on the official website and it really does seem as if he’s not going to be in the game after all. Or maybe he’s going to come back as a ghost or a robot or something?
Unlike Forge, who was a bit of surprise reveal, Revenant has been teased as a new playable character for ages, appearing in the background for fans to spot and in game files for dataminers to… mine.
Now, presumably, his time has come and he’ll be the new character for season 4, although that’s not yet confirmed by anything official.
The answer for what’s going on seems to be Respawn’s hatred of leaks, with developer Drew McCoy speaking out against them on Twitter.
Forge’s unveiling was a genuine surprise, which is becoming increasingly rare in gaming, although the cost for being so seems to be that he was never real.
Since it keeps popping up:
Leaks are the absolute worst. I’ve never worked on a single project where it was purposeful or wanted.
We spend insane amounts of time and energy to create cool surprises. Really sucks when someone wants internet points bad enough to ruin that.
