Antoine Griezmann has struggled to live up to the expectations placed on him when he joined Barcelona since his summer move.
And Frank Leboeuf believes the French forward should never have left Atletico Madrid in the summer, due to Lionel Messi.
Griezmann has played 11 games so far this campaign, but has scored only four times.
The 28-year-old has struggled to form a strong relationship with Messi and Luis Suarez, with reports in Spain even claiming he could be sold next year if things don’t improve.
Reports have suggested Messi and Suarez were both unhappy that the club chose to fork out £108million for Griezmann and yet failed to bring PSG star Neymar back to the club.
And now, France legend Leboeuf has criticised the ex-Atletico man for leaving in the first place, saying he was never going to replace Messi as the club’s main man.
“I think he should have thought twice about signing,” Leboeuf said on ESPN FC.
“His favourite positions are taken, and it’s hard for him to show his talent if he’s not playing in the best position.
“He’s also got to give everything for the king, and the king is Messi.
“Imagine if you had another choice of playing for Valverde, and that’s Griezmann, do you think Messi will have acceptance towards that? I’m not sure about that.
“It’s a complicated situation.”
Reports in Spain have claimed that Griezmann’s infamous ‘La Decision’ documentary from last year – in which he snubbed Barcelona in favour of a new contract at Atletico – enraged the likes of Messi and Suarez.
This year, however, he finally made the move, but Leboeuf went on to explain that the striker made the wrong decision.
“If I was Griezmann I would never – even if it’s his dream – signed for Barcelona because of the situation of Barcelona with the King, Messi,” he continued.
“It’s tricky, because you want to play with the best player in the world, you want to play in barcelona to be successful, but it’s hard to be another star where only one can be a star, that’s Messi.”
