Anthony Mackie has revealed he’s ‘extremely emotional’ to take on the role of Captain America.

Spoilers ahead!

In Avengers: EndGame, Chris Evans’ Captain America went back in time to return the infinity stones to where they were stolen from. Once he’s done, he stayed in the past and lived out his full life with sweetheart Peggy Carter.

He returned to the present, but had aged to 106 years old.

As a result, he decided to pass on the helm of Captain America to Sam Wilson (also known as Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie).

This meant his character will now play Captain America in future releases for the franchise.

And it’s something Anthony Mackie is ‘extremely emotional’ about.

Speaking to Deadline, Anthony said: ‘You know what, to be honest, it’s very emotional.’

‘I’ve been in the business for 20 years and I’ve been fortunate to do some amazing stuff and work with amazing people,’ he added.

Anthony revealed it’s a huge step forward for representation in the film industry.

He said: ‘For me, to be a black man in 2019 and be given the helm of Captain America with the history of black men in this country is a monumental step, not only in entertainment, but also in my life.

‘It’s been extremely emotional.’

‘Look, my grandfather was a sharecropper, you know what I mean? There’s a lot of history and pain and triumph and joy that comes along with me being Captain America,’ he added.

Earlier this month, showrunner Malcolm Spellman confirmed filming for Falcon and the Winter Soldier had begun in Atlanta, Georgia.

He shared a sneaky photo of the logo on Instagram, with the caption: ‘Craaazy to see it come to life. Marvel ain’t allowing photos from set right now but this is a huge day for a lot of people including me.’

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will be based loosely off the comic books of the same name.
