Anita Rani: Strictly star calls for ‘non-dancer’ to replace Darcey Bussell as a judge

Countryfile host Anita Rani, 41, danced with Gleb Savchenko, 35, on Strictly Come Dancing back in 2015, reaching the semi-final round of the BBC show. The presenter returned to the dance floor last year with Neil Jones, 36, in the Christmas special of the show. Just last month, veteran judge Darcey Bussell, 50, announced she has left the show after seven years on the panel. Now, Anita has exclusively told Express.co.uk who she thinks should replace her on the show.

She said: “I think they should have a complete non-dancer to replace her who just reflects on what the audience are saying.

“Someone with completely no dance experience.”

Following her appearance on Celebrity Juice, she jokingly added: “I think Keith Lemon should do it.”

Anita added she would like to see another woman replace Darcey and would favour Nicole Scherzinger, 40, to sit on the panel.

She added: “It has to be a woman. I can’t think of anyone.

“I think it should be a non-dancer because all of us watch it on TV and end up shouting at the TV saying we don’t see what you see and maybe someone can just tell it how it is.”

Reflecting on her first time on the show, Anita shared her thoughts on the judge’s critique.

She added: “I did and I didn’t care about the feedback.

“It’s an an entertainment show at the end of the day, they’re going to say what they want to say.

“I don’t mind, I took it quite well,” she added.

But the presenter admitted she’d often end up in tears because of the intense training.

She added: “I did cry but not because of the judges I was crying because I was training so hard.”

Elsewhere, Anita is currently supporting BBC One’s War on Plastics alongside co-host Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, 54.

The presenters take a look into how our recycling system is flawed with plastic in a three-part series.

Anita admitted investigating the topic was an eye-opener to her and most of the cast involved.

In one episode, Anita and Hugh challenged a street in Bristol to pick out all their single use plastic from their homes and come up with an alternative in a bid to reduce plastic.

Anita later challenges companies who make wet wipes, after discovering 80 per cent of the household item are plastic.

The presenter said: “Everybody watching will hopefully be able to relate because we are looking at the plastic use we have in our lives and how much of it is all around us.

“The thing we say about it is when you see it, you can’t unsee it, it’s all around us.”

War on Plastic with Anita and Hugh airs 10 June from 9pm on BBC One.
