Angelina Jolie donates $1m to coronavirus charity for underprivileged children

Angelina Jolie has donated $1 million (£831,000) to a charity aiming to feed underprivileged children amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Eternals actress has generously handed over the sizeable donation to No Kid Hungry, an organisation which has spread $2 million (£1.6 million) across 30 states in the US to provide food for low-income families. 

Explaining why she chose to get involved with this particular charity, Angelina said in a statement: ‘As of this week, over a billion children are out of school worldwide because of closures linked to coronavirus.

‘Many children depend on the care and nutrition they receive during school hours, including nearly 22 million children in America who rely on food support. Kid Hungry is making resolute efforts to reach as many of those children as possible.’ 

Angelina, 44, is a mother of six herself, sharing Maddox, 18, Pax, 16, Zahara, 15, Shiloh, 13, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 11, with ex-husband Brad Pitt. 

Jennifer Garner and Amy Adams started a fundraiser for the charity last week. The actresses recorded a joint message announcing that they would children’s stories via Instagram to raise money as part of the Save With Stories.

Stars such as Lupita Nyong’o, Brie Larson, Camila Cabello and Noah Centineo are among the other celebrities to support No Kid Hungry. 

Angelina is known for her philanthropy work and is a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

Angelina isn’t the only celebrity doing good during the global health crisis.

Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation has donated $5million (£4.2m) to aid the coronavirus response. Arnold Schwarzenegger donated $1 million to the Frontline Responders Fun, while Gwyneth Paltrow also handed over $100,000 (£83,000) to the charity. 

The coronavirus strain Covid-19 has spread worldwide, claiming the lives of more than 21,000 people. So far, there are over 472,000 cases reported around the world.
