Angel Gomes has hit back at accusations that he was dropped for Manchester United’s FA Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers because he missed training this week.

The 19-year-old was surprisingly left out on Sunday as goals from Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood eased Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to a 6-0 victory over their League One opponents.

Gomes was expected to make an appearance after being named on the bench for United’s 2-0 defeat to Burnley on Wednesday evening.

But the midfielder was surprisingly omitted by Solskjaer for United’s FA Cup fourth-round clash.

Reports had claimed that Gomes was dropped after he was sent home from training this week for turning up late.

But Gomes mocked those accusations on Twitter after the match, while United have also distanced themselves from the claims.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer praised his players for their attitude and performance against Tranmere.

‘You see that pitch and I can understand if players feel I don’t want to play on this,’ the United manager told MUTV.

‘We made sure before the game we had the right attitude. Go out there and do the job.

‘Everyone is waiting for us to fail because it’s set up for that and they were excellent, the players. Of course, early on they had a little burst in the first few minutes.

‘We stood up well against it and when you score three goals in 15 minutes you’re delighted.

‘Different scorers, which also is good, confidence spread around, clean sheet, we scored on a set play so loads of positives.’
