Andre Ward's scathing assessment of Andy Ruiz Jr after defeat by Anthony Joshua

Andre Ward slammed Andy Ruiz Jr for his performance in his rematch against Anthony Joshua.

Ruiz was beaten on points in Saudi Arabia after an accomplished display from Joshua, who reclaimed his world heavyweight titles.

The Mexican admitted after the fight that he wasn’t in shape, having come in a staggering 15lb heavier than their first bout.

Former world champion Ward was not impressed with Ruiz and launched a scathing assessment on social media.

“Andy Ruiz blew a big opportunity in the Middle East. He said he would die in the ring to keep his belts,” he wrote on social media.

“It didn’t take all of that, it just took the discipline and courage to push the plate back and deny himself, to put himself in the best position to win. He couldn’t do it.”

Ward also compared Ruiz’s weight gain to that of Buster Douglas for his title defence against Evander Holyfield in 1990.

He added: “The curse of the 15lb weight gain continues. James Buster Douglas came into his first defense of his title against Evander Holyfield, after shockingly beating Mike Tyson. It didn’t work for Douglas that night, and it didn’t work for Ruiz tonight.”

Speaking after the fight, Ruiz conceded: “It was his night. I didn’t prepare how I should have, I gained too much weight.

“I don’t want to give too many excuses, he boxed me around. If we do the third, best believe I get in the best shape of my life.

“[The weight] affected me. I thought I’d feel stronger, thought I’d feel better. I tried to train myself, but I don’t want to give no excuses. Anthony Joshua did a hell of a job.”
