The New York-based franchise in the upcoming geolocated Call of Duty League will be known as the New York Subliners, owner Andbox announced Monday.
A teaser trailer features several shots of the New York City subway system. As for the name itself, a post on the team’s official league website suggests that it “resists definition,” and that the wordmark is inspired by lettering from construction zones to war zones. Meanwhile, the yellow-and-black logo is inspired by warship camouflage.
“Being visually loud draws more attention than it deflects, but at high speeds, it disorients opponents and distorts their perception,” reads the post. “Our logo is a weapon and a provocation; a crosshair and a moving target. It is always active, moving with speed and precision to confuse—not conceal.”
Andbox also owns the Overwatch League’s New York Excelsior, and the teams will use similar official abbreviations: NYSL for the Subliners, much like NYXL for the Excelsior.
The New York Subliners is the fourth team branding to be announced for the league, following ReKTGlobal’s London Royal Ravens, Envy Gaming’s Dallas Empire, and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment’s Los Angeles Guerrillas. The eight other franchise owners have yet to reveal their branding.
Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty League will begin play in early 2020 with teams hosting home series weekends in their respective home markets, and more than $6M USD awarded in prizing during the debut Call of Duty: Modern Warfare season.
