Ancelotti explains why "joke" European Super League was doomed from the start

Carlo Ancelotti is adamant the Super League breakaway was doomed from the start because the rebel clubs made a fatal mistake: failing to listen to players and managers.

The Everton boss has been in charge at FOUR of the clubs involved in the secret negotiations that threatened to destroy football in its current form, and was also manager at PSG and Bayern Munich, who were both invited to join.

So the former Juventus, Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea chief knows what he is talking about, and he passionately believes the plans were always fundamentally flawed, because they didn’t take into account the two most important elements of the sport.

“I thought it was a joke and I was sure it was not going to happen, because, what can I say – they were wrong, these 12 clubs were wrong, full stop, because they didn’t take into account the two most important parts,” he explained.

“One is the players and the managers also, and the other part is the supporters. They didn’t take into consideration these opinions – and that is the way, these two parts are never involved.

“They need to listen to not only the supporters but the managers and players as well. I would like to be involved in the schedule of the competition, in the decisions by FIFA over international breaks.

“Players have too many matches to play and that is why this season there are unbelievable injuries because there is no time to rest – if there is no ability to rest then they can not produce at 100 per cand their best.

“The quality will only improve if the players are in better condition.”

Ancelotti believes his voice, and those of his fellow managers should be listened to before any notion of a Super League is ever resurrected.

He agrees with the breakaway clubs at least, in their idea that the Champions League needs reform. He also thinks the Premier League could be improved.

And that Italian has also proposed a salary cap…even if it means him taking a pay cut!

“I agree with the fact that the Champions League…..but also the Premier League, it is the most competitive league in the world, but it can be more competitive. Why not?

“The Champions League is only competitive from March until May. Two months from the quarter finals. The groups now (are) already decided who is going to be first and who is going to be second.

“The new format keeps the competition more exciting from the beginning. But I think they can do better. The 12 clubs are not happy because if they are happy they would accept it.

“This kind of format can be reviewed a little bit, but it is better, and if they can agree it can be put in place before 2024.”

Ancelotti argued that another failure that doomed the Super League was the lack of “sporting merit” – the ability of all clubs to compete with the best team winning, and no closed shops.

And he hopes to demonstrate that mentality at Super League rebel Arsenal on Friday night.

“The sports culture in Europe is different to America because in Europe we live with the passion of the result.

“We’re born to have sporting merit. If you’re better than another team, you have to win – you have to play the best competition. I hope to win at Arsenal with merit, that we play better than Arsenal.”
