Among Us 2 cancelled because the original is too popular

The belated success of Among Us has caused developer Innersloth to abandon its plans for a sequel, as the original becomes a surprise hit.

Normally, if a game isn’t a hit within its first few weeks it probably never will be. There can be exceptions, especially when it comes to online-only titles, but there are few games that have taken as long to become a success as Among Us.

The game was first released on smartphones and PC in late 2018 and went almost completely without notice by the wider gaming world, until various streamers, such as Pokimane and Sodapoppin, started playing it last month.

That lead to a 143,073% increase in concurrent players on Steam, from the beginning of the year until now, with a concurrent total of 1.5 million across all formats.

Innersloth has now decided that it will take all the ideas it had for a sequel and integrate them into the existing game as extra content, which according to their blog will be difficult to engineer as the game was never designed with updates in mind.

Their first priority though is sorting out the severs, which, as you can imagine, have been struggling with the sudden influx of new players.

‘We have lots of things planned and we’re excited to bring new content to everyone as you continue to enjoy playing!’, says the blog.

If you’ve never heard of Among Us before it’s a four to 10-player title inspired by party game Mafia, where a minority of players are cast as alien infiltrators on a human spaceship or sci-fi base.

Everyone’s given menial tasks to perform, in the form of mini-games, which gives the aliens a chance to sabotage the spaceship and kill the humans.

Given the game’s success there’s now talk of console versions in the future, although it doesn’t sound like that’ll be happening anytime soon.
