The new Gallup poll on the world’s emotional state in 2018 also found that 45 per cent of Americans felt worried a lot and one in five said they had been angry.

It put the United States in joint fourth place for the most stressed populations in 2018, along with Iran, Albania and Sri Lanka at 55 per cent.

The US was trailed only by Greece, which topped the table at 59 per cent of the population, the Philippines at 58 per cent and Tanzania at 57 per cent.

Can money buy happiness?

Greece – the European country worst affected by the 2008 financial crash – has led the world as the most stressed nation every year since 2012.

But according to Gallup, the economy doesn’t appear to be the problem for American stress levels.

In fact, the survey shows that levels of negative emotions are even higher than they were during the Great Recession.

Jon Clifton, Gallup’s global managing partner, said in the report: “The answer to whether money truly buys happiness is still far from being understood, but this report gives global thinkers an idea of who is living the best and worst lives in the world.”

The report also found that it’s the younger generation of Americans that seems to be bearing the burden with a huge 64 per cent aged between 15 and 29 who admitted they were stressed a lot.

Exactly 50 per cent of Americans in the same age group said they were worried a lot, while 32 per cent said they felt angry.

The group of Americans who felt the most stressed and worried were those aged between 30 and 49.

A quarter of that age group also said they had felt their patience was tested.
