American Horror Story 1984 finale leaves massive plot hole and fans are confused

Last night’s finale of American Horror Story: 1984 has managed to confuse fans as it leaves a massive plot hole in terms of series continuity.

The Ryan Murphy anthology series famously has an interconnected narrative throughout its nine seasons, yet its latest episode has left some gaping holes that the series might want to patch up.

1984, the ninth installment of the franchise, follows the classic structure of 80s slasher movie Friday the 13th, being set in an American summer camp, whose staff are hunted by some masked serial killers out for blood.

The season finale saw the plucky band of campers finally unite to defeat the ‘Night Stalker’ Richard Ramirez, barring of course some Groundhog Day-style time traps and a resurrection by Satan himself.

But fans have pointed out that Ramirez’s death in the episode (which is, as the title suggests, set in 1984) is at odds with events previously shown in the show’s fifth run, Hotel (the one with Lady Gaga).

Emma Roberts starred as the Final Girl in the ninth season 9Picture: FX)

Ramirez himself was present in the fifth season as a ghost living in the titular hotel (yes, just roll with it) where he attended a ‘Devil’s Dinner’ (once again, just roll with it) where he mentioned never getting caught for his crimes and dying in 2013.

‘Are we not going to talk about the Richard Ramirez death 1984/Hotel plot hole?’ one fan wrote.

Another called the continuity link out too, adding: ‘So where does Hotel fit into this? Poor old Richard Ramirez has to get to devil’s night.’

We wouldn’t perhaps have sympathy for a cold-blooded serial killer, but it’s true!

Fans might start looking for answers in the show’s already confirmed 10th season, but those episodes might have a lot to fit in, as it was announced the series will be ending for good after a decade on the small screen.

Franchise stalwart Sarah Paulson (who featured in every run of the show since its inception) gave 1984 a miss, but has said she ‘needs’ to come back for the next.

Another star who skipped slasher season (which starred ex-fiancee Emma Roberts in the leading role) was Evan Peters, who is now hitting headlines thanks to his relationship with pop star Halsey.

American Horror Story seasons 1-8 are now available to stream on Netflix.
