And job adverts will be re-written by employment chiefs to ensure they increase their appeal to female applicants.

Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, who has past experience of working as a divorced single mother, will unveil her action plan on Monday.

She will announce plans for a new computer portal to make it easier than ever before for women with childcare commitments to find work.

It will host about 50,000 flexible job adverts based across the UK that can help women strike the balance they want.

DWP chiefs are also testing pioneering technology to battle any lurking bias in its recruitment ads.

Ms Rudd told The Sun on Sunday: “Bringing up children on my own while trying to earn a living was a busy time for me. There were moments when one feels a pang of guilt as you rush off to work, knowing you may miss that special drama performance or school assembly.

TACKLING BIAS

“And it’s this experience that drives me to make it simpler and fairer for working mother’s to get back into the work.

“Having children should never be a barrier to entering the workplace and in 21st century Britain it should be easier than ever for women to enjoy flexible working.”

New software based on insight into how women respond to job advert language will edit the wording so they increase their appeal to female applicants.

The system goes further still by addressing bias across the whole process – anonymising applications and supporting and monitoring the application process by tracking whether jobs are attracting more diverse candidates.

Women’s and Equalities Minister Penny Mordaunt, who is backing the changes, said: “We want everyone to thrive, to be as financially secure and resilient as they can be, and to reach their full potential.

“The plans set out today by the Department for Work and Pensions will help people address some of the challenges and choices they face when looking for jobs and give them more options.

“In my forthcoming strategy this spring, I’ll be setting out the steps government – and its partners – will take to economically empower all women.”
