Amal And George Clooney's New App Helps To Fight Miscarriages Of Justice

Amal Clooney has achieved a lot in one week. First, the human rights lawyer delivered a passionate speech on preventing sexual violence being used as a weapon of war at a UN meeting in New York. Now, with her husband George Clooney, she has launched a new app, TrialWatch.

Launched in line with their charity, The Clooney Foundation For Justice, the AI app aims to collect data measuring miscarriages of justice due to race, gender, sexual orientation and class around the world. The couple set up their charity in 2016 in a bid to advance justice in courtrooms everywhere – and the app helps to collect corresponding data. Partnered with Microsoft, the app makes it easier to document cases in courtrooms that may be violating human rights by recording audio and taking photos of people and documents. The app can then conduct speech-to-text translation (in any language) so experts across the world can quickly access the information.

For the Clooneys, the app provides a useful tool in fighting for justice, for all. “A large number of countries allow women and girls to be prosecuted for abortion,” George told the audience at Columbia University on April 25. “In some countries, you can be imprisoned or killed for who you love.” Amal, who has represented various clients fighting for freedom – including Yazidi survivors (an ethnic Kurdish group) of sexual violence – stressed the importance of holding the current justice systems to account. “Without the fair administration of justice, it is not possible to hold the powers that be to account. There can be no democracy, no freedom of speech, no safety for minorities,” she said.

Last month, Clooney was appointed as a special envoy for the UK government. The new role will see her highlight attacks and restrictions placed on journalists around the world. Previously, she fought for journalist Khadija Ismayilova to be released from prison following her arrest due to her investigative work. Following the trial, Ismayilova was released in 2016.
