Ally McCoist has called on HMRC to answer serious questions over the Rangers tax case.
It emerged this morning, in a report from the Times, that Rangers may not have had to go through liquidation were it not for a HMRC blunder.
It is claimed that the tax men claimed for £50m MORE than was necessary after the EBT issues during Sir David Murray’s time at the club.
HMRC wanted Rangers to pay back £90m, forcing the club into administration and then down the leagues after liquidation.
But now the Times report that HMRC are set to wipe £50m off the bill, with other reductions including a £24m penalty charge being wiped, taking it down to just £20m.
And McCoist feels the dealings from the taxmen have left Rangers in the lurch and they should be answering some difficult questions.
“I have to say if this is the case, and I know HMRC haven’t commented this morning but I imagine serious questions will have to be answered,” he said on talkSPORT.
Rangers were demoted to the fourth tier in Scottish football and took four years to return to the top flight.
And former Rangers chairman John McClelland reckons the club would have been able to cope with the new figure at the time and would not have had to go down the leagues.
He said: “At the time of the sale of the club in 2011, had the tax claim been at the level now being reported then in my opinion, the outcome would have been different.
“I believe there would have certainly been a much higher level of interest of acquiring it and therefore more potential buyers.”
Rangers are still looking for their first trophy since being demoted to the bottom division but are in the Scottish League Cup final where they face Celtic on December 8.
They are also level with Celtic on 31 points after 12 games.
