Taylor Swift is known for using her music to take digs at the men in her life and right on brand, she did not disappoint in the new music video for The Man.
Singing, directing and acting in the video herself , Taylor targeted a handful of men in the industry through reenacting sexist double standards.
She also squeezed in some personal clapbacks to the people she believes have wronged her.
Most recently, she’s been embroiled in a public feud with Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta, who she accused of forbidding her to perform her own music, so understandably in true Taylor style she took this opportunity to send a very strong message.
‘No Scooters’
In the video, you can see a cleverly placed sign surrounded by the names of her albums in graffiti showing “no scooters.”
A clear dig that Scooter is not allowed anywhere near her music.
In the same shot, you can see a prominent sign which says “Missing: If found return to Taylor Swift ” – another dig at the fact that Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta own the rights to her past albums.
To top it off, The Man shown in the video is shown to be peeing around the signs – possibly to say they were “taking the p*ss?”
Kim Kardashian lookalike
We all remember the time Kanye West and Taylor Swift had a very pubic falling out over Kanye’s lyric “I think me and Taylor might still have sex, I made that b***h famous”.
His music video for some Famous saw him lying in bed surrounded by a number of celebrity lookalikes, including an uncanny doppelganger of Taylor.
In Taylor’s new video, a woman is seen lying in bed as The Man gets up, gets dressed and leaves.
She looks a lot like Kim Kardashian – which doesn’t seem like a coincidence.
‘What man won the year in celebrity dating’
Constantly being trolled for her love life, and being the victim of endless comments about going from one man to another, Taylor makes a sure point to turn the tables in this music video.
A scene where The Man is reading a newspaper shows the headline “For men with real thirst” and “What man won the year in celebrity dating”, suggesting she is fed up of the sexism she has faced.
Leonardo DiCaprio and The Wolf of Wall Street
Another instance where we see references to the double standards of dating is a scene where The Man is on a yacht with a number of bikini-clad women.
The shot is similar to real-life pictures of Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as scenes in his movie The Wolf of Wall Street.
Women’s charity tennis match
Taylor has been very open and giving when it comes to supporting charitable causes. In the video, we can see The Man playing tennis for a women’s charity match.
The Man is shown to be quite obnoxious and aggressive, which could be showing the irony of visibly supporting women’s causes yet not applying these good deeds and values to their real lives.
Written, directed and owned by Taylor Swift
After all that drama with Scooter Braun over the rights to her music, during the end credits Taylor makes it clear that she is the sole owner of all her work.
