The Red Devils and Tottenham are chasing the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.
Reports this week claimed Spurs had edged ahead of Manchester United in the race for the Portugal international.
Tottenham have held talks with Sporting, with Mauricio Pochettino reportedly giving a move for Fernandes the green light.
However, transfer expert and Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nico Schira claims Fernandes is heading to United.
Schira says the deal is all but done, with Fernandes heading to Old Trafford after the Portugal Super Cup on Sunday.
He tweeted: “All confirmed! After Portugal Super Cup #BrunoFernandes will leave from #Sporting to #ManchesterUnited.
“For him is ready a contract by €6M plus bonuses a year. #transfers #MUFF #mutd.”

It could be Fernandes’ final game for the Portuguese side before heading to United.
A lot has been made of United’s interest in Fernandes, with ESPN pundit Steve Nicol backing the midfielder to shine at Old Trafford.
“This has to be a hit. He’s a great player,” he said.
“Manchester United don’t have many great players, they need great players.
“They need to start doing something. We’ve got a couple of weeks until the start of the season and pretty much they’ve done nothing.
“It looks like the only thing that’s going to happen to them is they’re going to lose players not sign players.
“Talking the way we are does a disservice to this guy because I think this guy is a great player.
“He was linked with Liverpool last season and I was hoping that they would sign him. Obviously it didn’t come to fruition.
“I think he’s exactly what Manchester United need right now. I think this is a hit and it better be a hit for Man United fans’ sake.”
Fernandes could follow Harry Maguire to Old Trafford after United agreed an £80m deal with Leicester for the defender.
