Alicia Keys hosting the Grammys in 2020 for second year in a row after ‘powerful experience’

Alicia’s making her Grammys return in January

Alicia Keys will be gracing the Grammys stage once again as she’s confirmed to host the 2020 awards show after a well-received turn this year.

The Fallin’ singer hosted the annual music awards for the first time in February and clearly impressed producers as they’ve signed her up for another year.

Reacting to the news, Alicia said in a statement: ‘At first I did think last year was a one-time thing but when the opportunity came back around there was no question about returning as host of the GRAMMY Awards.

‘Last year was such a powerful experience for me. Not only did I feel the love in the room, but I felt it from around the world and it confirmed the healing and unifying power of music.’

Grammys president and CEO Deborah Dugan added: ‘From best new artist recipient to Grammy Award host, Alicia Keys has been a beacon of artistry within the music community for more than two decades.

‘Last year was a testament to her compelling creativity and we are thrilled that she will return to the Grammy stage as our host. Anything can happen, you don’t want to miss it.’

Alicia, 38, completely stole the show during the 2019 Grammys when she played a medley of hit songs on two pianos at the same time.

Frankly, we’re wondering how she’ll manage to top that next year.

Sitting in between the two pianos at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, Alicia said: ‘I’ve been thinking so much about the people and the music that have inspired me, and I want to give a shout out to Hazel Scott because I always wanted to play to pianos.’

She added in reference to songs from Nat King Cole, Lauryn Hill and Roberta Flack: ‘You know those songs that live inside of you and live inside of me, and you just love it so much, because it was done so well that you wish you wrote it?

‘That’s how I feel about these songs. I wish I wrote them.’

Grammys excitement aside, it’s been an emotional week for Alicia who shared her frustration about criticism of her son Genesis, four, wearing rainbow-coloured nail polish.

In an Instagram video, Alicia explained: ‘So he tells the lady that he wants rainbow colours on his nails, and she brings all of these colours, and she paints each nail a different colour. And after she painted his nails, he looked at me, he said, “Mummy, I don’t want this on my nails”.

She continued: ‘And I was like, “Why? You were so sure. You were good”. And he was like, “People are not going to like it”. Can you believe this? Four years old. He’s four. And he already understands the concept that someone’s going to judge him because he chose rainbow colours on his nails.’

But Alicia told him: ‘“You chose it. You liked it. You do it. Who cares what anybody else says?”’

The Grammys 2020 are set to take place on 26 January in Los Angeles and the nominations will be announced on 20 November.
