Viewers were left upset after TV coverage continued while footballer Christian Eriksen was being resuscitated on the pitch during the Denmark v Finland game at Uefa Euro 2020

The 29-year-old player collapsed on the pitch during the game, which saw him needing urgent medical attention.

Despite the serious situation unfolding and fellow players forming a circle around the player as he lay on the ground, cameras kept cutting back to show him receiving CPR.

Footage continued live for several minutes after Eriksen’s collapse, including showing his girlfriend heading onto the pitch.

Viewers were distressed that the footage did not cut back to the studio sooner, tweeting: ‘Denmark’s players had to form a protective ring around their teammate. A distraught wife was broadcast to the world. TV broadcasters and cameramen are capable of blocking footage of pitch invaders, but not this? Sorry, that is not ok.’

Others added: ‘Between lingering zoomed in on Eriksen’s face while he lay unmoving and then cutting to his devastated wife on the pitch the BBC has f**king questions to answer.’

When it did eventually cut back to the studio, presenter Alex Scott, 36, was seen breaking down in tears at what she had witnessed.

A former professional footballer herself, she revealed that she had messaged her mum to tell her she loved her as the incident had hit so close to home.

She told Gary Lineker: ‘Like Cesc [Fabregas] said, I’m already getting emotional, I can’t believe and everyone at home, what we’re witnessing.

‘Like you said Gary, I think football totally goes out the window right now. You’re thinking about his family and the rest of his players out there witnessing it as well.

‘Actually just got on my phone and told my mum that I love her. It’s a reminder of how quickly life can change just like that.’

Eriksen’s condition has since been confirmed to be stable.
