The One Show host Alex Jones, 45, and Rylan Clark-Neal, 30, fronted the show on Friday evening and were joined by Danny DeVito, 74, to discuss his new film, Dumbo. The programme aired a snippet of Danny in action in the upcoming movie in which he opened a drawer to unveil a monkey. After watching the clip, Rylan couldn’t resist telling all about a conversation he and Alex had before going live. He told Danny: “I really want you to know…” before turning to Alex and asking her: “What did you ask me when we watched that clip?”
Seeming embarrassed, Alex put her hand over her face replying: “I can’t… we are on television.”
When pushed further she hesitantly revealed to Danny she had asked Rylan if the monkey in the movie was real.
Alex’s admission prompted Danny and the studio audience to burst into fits of laughter, leaving Alex more embarrassed.
She added: “Now it is clear that it’s not.”
Rylan then said: “Danny, you wouldn’t think I was the one who isn’t always here would you?”
Danny then clarified: “No, there is no monkey in the drawer.”
Alex replied: “That would be very cruel,” to which Danny added: “And dangerous!”
The presenter was also left startled after learning how Dumbo the elephant was brought to life by CGI.
The actor explained: “There’s this guy, Ed, that did the elephant.
“He’s in a suit, he’s a little guy. He puts these extensions on…”
But a startled Alex swiftly interrupted, asking: “Hang on a minute. There’s a man in the suit?
“Oh I can’t cope, I can’t cope,” she continued as her co-host jokingly hugged her.
Puzzled by her reaction Danny asked: “Is that too scary?”
Rylan then explained to the actor Alex had taken a liking to Dumbo and even asked him where she could get one from.
Alex added: “I thought it was so lovely. I can’t bear that someone was inside.”
The One Show continues tonight on BBC One at 7pm.
