EASTER eggs from discounters including Aldi and Tesco have beaten off competition from posher supermarkets in a blind taste test.
Over 60 treats from ten national supermarkets were assessed by a team of BBC Good Food tasters to find the best dark, milk, white, dairy-free and miniature chocolate eggs.

Unlike the similar Good Housekeeping taste test, price and weight were’t taken into consideration.
Tasters crowned Aldi’s posh Moser Roth hand decorated ripple egg with truffles the winner in the white chocolate category.
Judges praised it for its “stand-out design” and thin chocolate, which made it extra “smashable”, but it was let down by the raspberry-filled truffles which they described as being “sickly-sweet”.
The egg weighs 220g, cost £4.99, and are only available to buy in store from Aldi.

BBC Good Food carried out a blind taste test on 60 chocolate eggs from ten national supermarkets. Here’s what came out on top in each category:
Best milk chocolate egg
- M&S Fudge Easter Sundae, £10
Best dark chocolate egg
- Sainsbury’s Cocoa et Co Single Origin dark chocolate tear drop, £10
Best white chocolate egg
- Aldi’s Moser Roth hand decorated Belgian white chocolate ripple egg with raspberry filled truffles, £4.99

- Asda Extra Special free from Belgian dark chocolate egg with vanilla flavoured truffles, £5

- Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Swizz milk chocolate eggs, £2
Tesco’s Doug the Dinosaur scooped top place in the best kids’ chocolate Easter egg category.
The treat was praised for its “universal appeal” with top quality milk chocolate that was “just the right thickness”.
At £3.50, it was cheaper than the Co-op’s chocolate honeycomb crunch Egg-splosion loaded egg, which costs £5.
The 200g white chocolate egg was awarded highly-commended in this category as it wasn’t considered to be as fun as the winner.
M&S’ posh fudge Easter sundae treat won in the best milk chocolate category thanks to its high-quality chocolate and splat design.
The caramelised white chocolate, dark chocolate biscuit, pretzel and mini fudge pieces topping was the crowning feature, according to the judges.

You’ll need to fork out a small fortune for it though because the egg costs £10 each, and is only available to buy in store.
Shoppers can actually get a better deal on milk chocolate eggs this Easter by heading to Morrisons, which has slashed the price of Cadbury and Thorntons ones by half to £2.
When it comes to dark chocolate, the judges recommend Sainsbury’s Cocoa et Co Single Origin dark chocolate tear drop.
It was praised for its rich and intense taste as well as the luxe-looking design.
But again, the luxury treat will set you back a tenner, although they’re available to buy in stores and online.
Sainsbury’s also beat off competition in the best miniature egg’s category too, with it’s Taste the Different Swiss milk chocolate eggs being described as “melt-in-mouth” and “moreish”.
These are available to buy online and in stores and cost £2 for a 120g bag.
There are ways to save cash on your Easter treats though if these price tags are still too much.
