Alan Shearer and Ian Wright agree that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still has some serious work to do in the transfer market if Manchester United are to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for trophies.

United narrowly beat Norwich to reach their 30th FA Cup semi-final – a record for the competition – with Harry Maguire scoring a late winner deep into extra-time against the Canaries.

After the match, Shearer was quizzed about how many signings United need before they can start challenging for major trophies again.

He told the BBC: ‘I think three or four big players. Right side of midfield, possibly a centre-forward, centre-halve and maybe another midfielder.’

United have been heavily lined with a move for Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho and Wright agreed the England international was exactly the player United needed to lure to Old Trafford.

‘That’s the kind of signing (Sancho) they have to make if they’re going to be challenging City and Liverpool,’ he said.

‘Everybody is excited about Bruno Fernandes and Pogba.

‘Martial and Rashford, both of them 19 goals each, last time any Man Utd players got that was Chicharito (Javier Hernandez) and (Dimitar) Berbatov.

‘It seems like it’s starting to happen [for United].’

Solskjaer was asked about United’s chances of signing Sancho before his side’s clash with Norwich and the Norwegian expertly dodged the question, insisting he could not say anything.

But the United boss did reveal United had to wait for the smoke to clear from the coronavirus pandemic until they could finalise their transfer plans.

‘I think it’ll be a calm transfer window or a sightly different kind of window,’ said Solskjaer.

‘I think a lot of clubs will have to be careful not to spend too much money. You might still not know how much you’ve lost financially during this pandemic and what’s gone on lately.

‘We’re quite relaxed. I am very happy with the squad I have. I think it looks better and better.

‘And then there is something in front of us screaming that it’s sensible, both from a sporting and a financial perspective.

‘So I know we’re going to try but you can’t make any promises.’
