Alan Shearer accuses Sadio Mane of diving to win crucial Liverpool penalty

Alan Shearer has accused Liverpool’s Sadio Mane of diving to win the injury-time penalty in their 2-1 victory over Leicester at Anfield on Saturday.

Mane was deemed to have been fouled by Marc Albrighton after the winger came under pressure, with Chris Kavanagh immediately pointing to the spot.

Kavanagh’s decision was checked and upheld by VAR and James Milner stepped up to convert from 12 yards and extend the Reds grasp on top spot.

The game ended with tempers flared with a brawl unfolding between the two sides, as Leicester vented their frustration and were clearly unhappy with the decision and result.

Shearer criticised Mane for ‘diving’

“I don’t think it’s a penalty, I think it’s a dive,” the former Newcastle striker said on Match of the Day.

“It’s a contact sport. Mane takes a touch against Albrighton and then decides to go down.”

The comments made by Shearer echoed those made by Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers after the game, who claimed the penalty wasn’t ‘clear and obvious’ and that it shouldn’t have been given.

Liverpool took the lead through Mane towards the end of the first half on home soil, slotting his shot past Kasper Schmeichel in the Foxes goal.

Before James Maddison thought he’d earned a point for the visitors after striking home from an Ayoze Perez pass.

However, Milner’s 95minute penalty denied Rodgers on his first return to Anfield since his sacking in October 2015.
