Airport security queues will be slashed as 100ml liquid ban set to be lifted by 2022 thanks to new 3D scanners

EVERY Bank Holiday millions of Brits jet off on well-deserved breaks.

As Transport Secretary I’m determined to make sure those trips are not only completely safe, but smooth and stress free too.

Like many travellers, I’ve spent long periods waiting in airport security. And I know how stressful that can feel. Long queues ultimately leave passengers anxious about missing their flight.

That’s why I’m delighted to announce plans for all major UK airports to put in place new cabin baggage screening technology. This cutting-edge 3D technology means that in the near future, you won’t need to remove liquids, laptops or iPads from your bag when passing through security.

It’s never fun having to lug out your laptop or locate your mobile phone, and these changes will, in time, eradicate that awkward two-tray juggling too.

To speed things up even further, when the 3D screening technology rollout is complete, toiletries could also stay in your hand luggage. Gone will be the intrusive experience of having to empty out your bags full of shampoo, perfume and toothpaste in full view of everyone.

And it’s not just during the security process where time will be saved. Currently, well before reaching airport screening, air passengers face the common bugbear of decanting toiletries into smaller bottles – each under the 100ml hand luggage liquid limit.

Then there is the frustrating dilemma over what to keep or what to chuck when more expensive liquid items, such as makeup, can’t be transferred. When this liquid ration may not be enough to last a full trip, some passengers have to resort to paying for a hold bag. That means wasting yet more precious time hanging out at the baggage carousel, hoping your bags are first off the plane.

These new 3D security machines will also reduce plastic use by doing away with those tiny plastic bags that are currently used to squeeze toiletries into before passing through security. And indeed, the benefits of this new UK deployed technology will not only be felt by passengers in this country, but by airports in the rest of the world too.

Our aviation network is unrivalled in Europe, with 284 million people passing through our terminals for business or pleasure every year. And so these measures to get travellers through security quickly and smoothly, will also make a positive impression on tourists, too. Our improved security capability will keep us all safer both on land and in the air.

And, of course, securing the UK’s position as a global hub for trade, tourism and investment is in the interests of the entire country.

As we look forward to our bright future outside of the EU, it’s crucial we send a strong message that the UK is open for business around the world.

Rolling out this technology is another sign that this energetic new Government is making the UK an even more outward looking global country to visit and invest in after we leave the EU, while also improving people’s everyday lives.
