After being booted off country charts, ‘Old Town Road’ heads to the CMA Awards

The “Old Town Road” now leads to country music’s biggest night.

Once kicked off the Billboard country music charts for not embracing “enough elements of today’s country music” the Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus musical phenomenon earned a ticket Wednesday to the 53rd CMA Awards.

The song received a “Musical Event of the Year” nomination. The full field:

2019 CMA Awards nominations: Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Eric Church, Maren Morris take early lead

It’s not the first time the CMA has embraced the song that’s asked gatekeepers to define country music’s limits in 2019, either. Lil Nas X and Cyrus surprised thousands last June at Nissan Stadium by performing the Western rap bop at CMA Fest with Keith Urban.

Earlier this summer, with the help of an onslaught of remixes, “Old Town Road” broke the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 record for longest-running No. 1 single. It served 19 weeks in the top slot.

“Old Town Road” won its first major award Monday night, bringing home Song of the Year at the VMAs.

“The people really became the power behind the song,” Cyrus told the Tennessean in July.

The 53rd CMA Awards is Nov. 13 in Nashville.
