Adrenaline junkies and fitness fanatics will love a trip to Dubai

Travellers flock to Dubai year after year to experience the sandy beaches and world-class attractions, but did you know that it’s actually a haven for sports fans too?

Whether you want to play or spectate you’ll be bowled over by the choice available in the city.

One of the great things about holidaying in Dubai is that you can get involved in summer sports even when it’s cold and grey back home.

There are loads to choose from too. From water sports to go-karting, there’s something for everyone.

Take the plunge

Dubai’s golden sands are a hive of activity and the warm, clear waters of the Arabian Gulf are perfect for swimming, fishing, sailing and water sports.

Under the sea

Whether you’re an experienced scuba diver or a first-timer looking to take your PADI certificate, Dubai is a great place to experience the thrills of the deep.

From shipwrecks to marine life there is so much to see in the depths of the Arabian ocean, but if you’re not yet ready for open water there are plenty of other places to get your flippers on, like the Lost Chambers Aquarium at Atlantis The Palm.

Unlike diving in the sea, this controlled experience means you’ll have guaranteed sightings of marine life, including sharks!

Let’s go fly a kite

If you’ve never tried your hand at kitesurfing then Dubai’s famous Kite Beach is the ideal place to take your maiden voyage.

If kitesurfing isn’t your thing then this white sandy beach is also popular for kayaking – and it even has a running track if you’ve still got some calories to burn.

Magnificent sevens

Any sports fan will know that the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens is not to be missed. Taking place from December 5-7 the tournament is the first leg of the annual World Rugby Sevens Series.

Spectators can get their kicks as the whole thing has a party atmosphere: fancy dress is encouraged and this year’s performers include Kylie Minogue.

Up for a challenge?

The Dubai Fitness Challenge happens every autumn – the main objective is to get Dubai residents doing 30 minutes of exercise every day for one month.

Those visiting during this time can expect to see fitness events across Dubai – so it’s a great time for a healthy holiday.

Across the city there will be fitness hubs created especially for the Dubai Fitness Challenge, as well as more than 5,000 free classes and activities for everyone to participate in.

If you fancy something a bit more hardcore the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon takes place on January 24, 2020.

The wheel deal

If you prefer the scenic route, rent a mountain bike and head out along the Al Qudra Cycling Track, with its amazing views of the desert – especially at sunrise or sunset – or take the Hatta Mountain Bike Trail.

If you prefer to watch from the sidelines, you can show your support during UAE Tour, next on February 2020.

Over the dune

Dune bashing in a 4×4 is a bucket list activity for many people – and Dubai is the perfect place to enjoy it.

Tee Time?

If golf is your chosen sport you can watch elite players compete in the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai from November 21 to 24, or the Omega Dubai Desert Classic from January 23 to 26.

If you prefer to play, you can easily rent a set of clubs and head out for a round on one of the many stunning courses such as Emirates Golf Club, where the Omega Dubai Desert Classic takes place. Floodlit golf in the evenings, when the temperatures have cooled down, is a popular choice.

Dubai from the sky

Have you always dreamt of ski diving? If you think you’re brave enough you can give it a go with Skydive Dubai.

Choose from the Arabian desert or Palm Jumeirah as the backdrop for a tandem dive with an instructor (or solo dives for the more experienced) and take home a video of your adventure for memories which will last a lifetime.

It’s show time

At the end of the day, once you’ve tried all of the sporting activities Dubai has to offer, why not take in a show?

Take the weight off your feet and book tickets for the breathtaking La Perle by Dragone where you can marvel at the amazing acrobats and aquatic and aerial performers.

There really is a sport for everyone to enjoy in year-round glorious temperatures and up to 12 hours of sunshine a day.
