A plucky rescue dog with a serious disability is determined to live her best life, despite the challenges she faces.

Rocky, an adorable mixed breed, recently suffered a horrific accident on the tracks at Ballabgarh railway station in Faridabad, India, severing both her front legs and leaving her with small stumps.

Railway Police discovered the injured dog and alerted Ravi Dubey, founder of People For Animals Trust Faridabad, who took her to the animal rescue centre where she was treated.

The pup was bleeding severely from all four legs and her front two legs were crushed, leaving vets no choice but to amputate them.

If Rocky had not been saved, she would have undoubtedly starved to death, bled out from her wounds or been attacked by other dogs.

The dog is currently in the care of her rescuer, Ravi and is able to get around quite comfortably despite her injuries, refusing to let her disability hold her back.

The lucky pup will be staying with Ravi until she’s ready to travel to the UK later this year.

Rocky wears prosthetic legs, designed by Dr Tapesh Mathur from Krishna Limbs for Animals. According to the vet, Rocky can live her life normally with prosthetic legs and may not need further surgery.

Rocky can move around, eat from a bowl and play freely once again.

‘Rocky loves people, she is a happy, affectionate and intelligent girl but because of her vulnerability she needs slow introductions to dogs and as a stray dog who has had to fend for herself in a compromised state, she resource guards her food,’ says Ravi.

‘She does have a select few friends that she doesn’t mind being around.’

Rocky is one of Wild at Heart Foundation’s Remarkable Rescues: a fund dedicated to dogs with severe and shocking injuries or disabilities, which has a partnership with People For Animals Trust Faridabad.

The foundation is looking to raise up to £10,000 for her boarding, transport, treatment, and aftercare.

A representative from Wild Heart Foundation adds: ‘With Rocky’s journey alone costing £2,500, we still need to raise money for her boarding, treatment and aftercare, depending on her needs and if it’s needed, for custom-made prosthetic legs with a specialist.

‘We are also looking into a front leg wheelchair for her.

‘She copes without her front legs by using her back legs and chin to balance but even though she seems to be coping okay, the foundation wants to make sure that we have explored every option to make sure that we are giving Rocky the best possible life.’

There are an estimated 35 million stray dogs in India (Picture: Wild Heart Foundation/Jam Press)

Wild at Heart Foundation has found a new home for Rocky in Cotswolds and are looking to send her over to the UK in late November.

There are an estimated 35 million stray dogs in India. With sterilisation virtually non-existent and many dogs surviving on scraps, this number is only set to rise.

And with such a high number of dogs roaming the streets and crossing the railway tracks in search of food or shelter, it’s hardly surprising that they fall victim to such life-altering accidents as Rocky did.
