Levine’s chilly demeanor at the show’s exhibition for NBC’s Upfronts May 13 did not play a role in his departure, sources told THR, adding that his exit from the series was said to be ‘amicable,’ with an eye toward potential future projects.

The Girls Like You artist’s pending departure was announced Friday on the Today show, as Carson Daly announced that Gwen Stefani would be taking Levine’s seat on the show’s upcoming season.

The She Will Be Loved singer, 40, said in an Instagram post that his time on the show was ‘a life shaping experience that will be close to [his] heart forever’ after his departure was announced Friday, adding that ‘it was time to move on.’

The Maroon 5 lead singer had appeared on the show since its 2011 debut, as he was a member of the original quartet of artists on the NBC competition alongside Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and CeeLo Green.
