ABBA: Eurovision winners hit back at Frida's criticisms of Song Contest

Last week ABBA star Frida spoke candidly about her band’s recent success. The singer of the Swedish quartet, who rose to prominence in 1974 after winning the Eurovision Song Contest, was celebrating the group’s new album, Voyage, hitting number one in the album charts in 12 countries. But when BBC Radio 2 star Zoe Ball quizzed Frida about the competition that made the band, she did not pull any punches.

Frida was asked if she still followed Eurovision: “I’m sorry to say no I don’t.

“I’m not so interested because it has changed so much over the years and it’s not what it was at that time.

“Now it’s more like a show, it’s very technical and there are some good songs coming out of it, but I cannot say I’m a fan of Eurovision.”

She added: “Maybe I shouldn’t say it, but I did it anyway.”

Now, the lead singer of Maneskin, Damiano David, has responded to Frida’s comments.

Maneskin won the Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year with their song Zitti e buoni.

Speaking at the MTV EMAs, Damiano said of Frida’s comments: “I think that everything changes with time so we have to deal with it – and we like it actually.”

Victoria De Angelis, the bassist for the band, added: “I think that when we went it was amazing.” (Via Metro)

ABBA recently released Voyage, their tenth studio album.

The record is their first in 40 years, following The Visitors in 1981.

Hitting out at Eurovision was not the only thing Frida was eager to say during her latest interview.

Frida also made a pointed comment at critics who did not review the album well.

Despite selling more than 200,000 units in its first week of release, Voyage was described as “naff”.

The ABBA star responded: “I’m so happy that people are touched by what we do – apart from some very sour critics – but we don’t care about them!”
