Aaron Ramsdale says his ‘immediate thoughts’ are with Dean Henderson after being called up as a replacement for the Manchester United goalkeeper in England’s Euro 2020 squad.

Henderson, 24, was an unused substitute as Raheem Sterling fired England to victory over Croatia at the weekend but has since been forced to withdraw from the squad due to a hip injury.

Uncapped Sheffield United shot-stopper Ramsdale – who was included in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary 33-man party before it was cut down to 26 players – is set to return to training on Wednesday ahead of the Three Lions’ second Group D clash with Scotland.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone are the other options available to Southgate at this summer’s tournament.

‘While I’m delighted to be joining back up with England, my immediate thoughts are with Deano as I know how much it meant to him to be involved,’ Ramsdale told his followers on Instagram on Tuesday.

‘I have now been given the honour and to be involved in a major tournament is what dreams are made of.

‘This is a special moment for me and my family.’

Henderson will return to Manchester to continue his recuperation ahead of the Red Devils’ busy pre-season schedule.

An FA statement said: ‘Aaron Ramsdale has replaced Dean Henderson in England’s UEFA Euro 2020 squad,’ an FA statement read on Tuesday morning.

‘Henderson withdraws with a hip issue that would continue to limit his involvement in training throughout the tournament.

‘Under UEFA regulations, squads are permitted to replace goalkeepers on medical grounds at any stage.

‘The Manchester United goalkeeper will now return to his club for further assessment and rehabilitation ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Back in 2017, Ramsdale was part of an England squad – also boasting the likes of Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho – which triumphed at the European Under-17 Championships.

The young ‘keeper, who started all 38 of Sheffield United’s matches in the Premier League last season, is yet to be capped at senior level.
