With the world slowly opening up again amid the coronavirus pandemic and the prospect of a summer holiday no longer being completely off the table, holidaymakers will be wondering how they can keep themselves safe if they’re heading abroad this year.

Laura Hamilton, the host of A Place In The Sun, has shared her tips for staying safe if you do book to travel this year, as the government prepares to relax restrictions on non-essential travel.

She told Metro.co.uk: ‘I’d definitely be taking hand sanitiser and face masks and I’m a massive advocate of this anyway, but I would say to travel with just hand luggage.’

While many of us may struggle to limit ourselves to just a carry-on case, there’s actually a very good reason to cut back on taking all those clothes you know you’ll never wear.

Laura explained: ‘I’d encourage people, if they can, to travel with hand luggage only as your bag will only be going into the overhead locker, it won’t be touched by other people.

‘It’s only you touching it and it minimises contact from other people. It also means you don’t have to hang around for longer while waiting to pick up your luggage when you land.’

Laura, who had her own family holiday to Oman cancelled due to the pandemic, says travellers need to make sure to read the small print when booking travel insurance also, as interruptions due to another wave of the pandemic probably won’t be covered on most policies.

‘You just have to be careful with your travel insurance and make sure you really look at what you’re covered for,’ she advised.

‘Lots of the travel companies have been incredible in that they’ve offered refunds. I think lots of travel companies have been great to us and if you can and you want to go, let’s support them back again and let’s get things moving.

‘Do you need to travel more responsibly? Yes. Do you need to follow the guidelines and wear a face mask and use hand sanitiser and all the rest of it? Yes, do it.

‘I would say maybe think about avoiding crowds and possibly renting a villa. Many hotels have also put measures in place and they have had months to plan this and remodel their businesses.’

When it comes to bagging a bargain, Laura advises using SkySkanner, predicting that Portugal is going to be a popular destination for many this year, once the government has lifted restrictions on non-essential travel.

Boris Johnson will allegedly give the go-ahead for foreign holidays next Monday, with air bridges to ten countries in Europe set to be announced – so there could still be hope for a 2020 trip after all.
