A love letter to Jennifer Lawrence – the refreshing and empowering celebrity icon we all need

It’s Jennifer Lawrence’s 29th birthday and rather than sending a big cake (we don’t actually know her address), you can’t blame us for going all giddy fan girl instead.

As well as perfecting acting roles and having swoon-worthy style icon credentials, J-Law radiates relatable kickass likeability. She photobombs other celebs on live TV, delivers sarcasm by the bucketload and just DGAF about potentially cringeworthy moments.

As that awkward teen and now 29-year-old who constantly embarrasses herself in public, I once crossed a road leaving my shoe behind while sporting the latest sliders. Seriously that cool, I aspire to not caring about slipping over in town or missing my mouth when eating pizza (while wearing a white top). Yet when J-Law trips, she makes it look like a fun past-time we all want to get on board with.

Famously falling up some stairs while en route to accepting an Oscar, Jen then told the audience they’d witnessed her most embarrassing moment ever. We’ll never forget it though, and she did make everyone love her even more

Specialising in award season entertainment, years ago, Jen crept up behind Taylor Swift during a televised E! slot. Pulling hilarious faces behind Taylor, without her knowledge, it made for TV gold. Joking she was going to push her down some stairs, J-Law’s wild behaviour gives us life.

Not caring about protocol, this is the kind of J-Law stunt that constantly thrills us – because she just isn’t like any other boring A-lister. Clearly known for pranking her peers, the Hunger Games actress also asked co-star Josh Hutcherson how his rash was during an interview. Jen is literally the naughty kid who gets away with everything and makes us all snort laughing in the process.

Talking of the celeb party circuit, famous people must get sick of being linked to the world and his wife, with their private lives constantly scrutinised. You probably can’t even subtly admire a hot actor at an event without marriage vows being predicted. And yes, high profile couples are notoriously mysterious for good reason. We totally understand. So did Jennifer rant and rave about yet another said romantic rumour swirling, connecting her to Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt recently? Was there a blunt refusal to confirm anything from Jen’s publicist, dismissing such stories as utter nonsense? Erm, not exactly. As part of a series with GQ called Actually Me, Jen logged onto Reddit, with an official response. Posting “No (I’m not dating Brad Pitt), but I’m not super excited to shut that rumour down.” Our hearts beat faster. For Jennifer and her awesomeness, rather than Mr Pitt. Soz, Brad.

Jen then revealed that she approached another member of Hollywood royalty, Harrison Ford, at a party while breaking out some moves, and he failed to recognise her. For everybody who has ever been awkwardly pied in the street or had a ‘hello’ ignored, we couldn’t appreciate this more.

But my favourite J-Law moment so far has to be her Facetiming Kris Jenner in an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Scott and Khloe answering the call, she playfully tells the pair “I am the new Kris” before ripping it out of them even more and signing off “you’re doing great sweetie, you’re doing great!” Proof of her seamlessly slotting into literally any scenario, nothing beats a J-Law cameo.

On a more serious note, she also knows how to deliver inspiration, the internet bursting with quotes and straight-talking J-Law snippets. Explaining: “I’m a big believer in accepting yourself the way you are and not really worrying about it”, we applaud this refreshing honesty in an often-superficial world. Positive, funny, ridiculously silly and always entertaining, here’s to more role models like her.

As pointed out so excellently by the birthday girl, “A powerful woman is someone who exudes confidence and can be tough but fair and kind. And also knows how to get what she wants.” Amen, sista, and many happy returns.

P.S Pop us down for your 30th guestlist, yeah Jen?
