Futuristic hands-free trash can automatically seals full garbage bags and replaces them with new ones so owners never have to get their hands dirty

Garbage receptacles aren’t often singled out for awards, but this week a futuristic new trash can earned a CES 2020 Innovation Award for its unique automated design.
Called Townew, the trash can will automatically seal garbage liners with the touch of a small button so users don’t have to go through the smelly and leak-prone process themselves.
After the old sealed bag is taken out, the Townew will automatically roll out a new liner from a housing underneath its lid, which the company calls a ‘Refill Ring.’

The Refill Ring contains one long trash liner that a small cutting mechanism segments into individual trash liners.
When the mechanism cuts and seals the top of an older liner, it also creates seals the bottom of the next liner segment.
The trash can will also have an infrared motion sensor on the top of the lid, making it possible to open and close without direct contact, through a quick hand wave.
The can will use four-gallon liners, and the company estimates the average liner package will produce 25 garbage bags, lasting about a month, according to The Verge.
Liner refills will be available in two varieties: a recyclable three-pack for $17.95, and a biodegradable three-pack for $26.95.
Larger six-packs will also be available, for $29.95 and $44.95 respectively.
Townew also sports an overflow sensor that will monitor whether a user is trying to put more trash into a single liner than it was designed for.
In the case of overflow, the lid will automatically lift up and back before trying to seal the top of the liner, preventing spillover garbage resting at the top from being inadvertently pushed out of the bin.

The whole system is powered by an internal battery that will last for around a month and can be recharged in about 10 hours through a charging cable.
The Townew will come in two colors, either white and teal, and sell for an MSRP of $119.95, though it’s currently offering a limited-time sale price of $99.95.
