The new special will examine the aftermath of the original series
A follow-up to the Surviving R. Kelly docu-series is on the way, according to Lifetime, the network that aired it.
Back in January, Lifetime debuted Surviving R. Kelly, a documentary series about the numerous abuse allegations made against R. Kelly by multiple women over the years. Yesterday, the network announced that a follow-up special is on the way.
Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact will be a two-hour special hosted by Soledad O’Brien. According to Deadline, the one-off will examine how the conversations about sexual assault have changed since the original docs-series aired, and it will also look at the R. Kelly case as a whole. While it is unknown when and if the special will air in the UK, it arrives in the US on May 4 at 10pm, only on Lifetime.
Meanwhile, on Thursday a woman who accused R Kelly of sexual abuse won a civil case against the singer after he failed to respond to the lawsuit and appear in court.
The woman, who alleged that Kelly had sex with her when she was 16, filed the case in February, only a day before the singer was arrested on 10 charges on sexual abuse.
Her lawyer Jeffrey Deutschman claims that she is one of four accusers, all of whom allege that they were underage, who are at the centre of Kelly’s criminal case. She is referred to as “HW” in all court filings.
The default ruling against Kelly was granted by Chicago judge Moira Johnson on Tuesday, after Kelly failed to turn up to court and respond to the case.
Also, it was reported earlier this month that Kelly only has $625 left to his name after the series of extensive legal battles.
The singer then asked the media to “take it easy on” him ahead of a paid appearance at an Illinois club. Kelly posted a video to his official Twitter page in which he said: “Yo, this your boy Kells. I’ve got an event to do tonight in Springfield, Illinois so I want the media to take it easy on me, man. This is how I gotta get paid for right now.”
