A fashion editor’s guide to autumn dressing

For fashion editors, observing red-carpet dressing — see Oscars night, The Met Ball and any one of Hailey Bieber’s 900 wedding changes — can be as thrilling as a Champions’ League Final.

But that doesn’t mean we want in on the act. I’ve watched enough blockbuster couture gowns paraded up and down the catwalk to know that put-together Hollywood glamour and I will never be more than friends who send the odd polite DM having never actually exchanged numbers. As much as I admire the merits of a perfectly pitched party dress, put one on me and I look as uncomfortable as Rebekah Vardy’s social media manager.

On Sunday, squelching through the puddles of Epping Forest, it struck me that autumn weekending is my style happy place. I’m not alone. For many of us who spend our weekday mornings fretting about what outfit best suits the (delete as appropriate) big meeting/job interview/Tinder date planned for the day ahead, a wet, slightly chilly, weekend like the one just passed is a chance to indulge in the clothes that really make us feel good.

Take a minute to think about how you feel in your off-duty uniform of choice and you’ll know where I’m coming from. When the pressure is off and the cosy socks are on is a style sweet spot.

Is there a winning formula for autumn weekend style success? Definitely not. The joy of this look hinges on its effortlessness and the fact that it can be whatever you want it to be. But there are a number of key items certain to lift spirits whilst maintaining the style status you’ve worked hard for all week — practicality unites them all.

Footwear is key. Decades before Kate Moss made Hunter wellies high-fashion attire, Billy Connolly gifted the British outdoors brand with the greatest ad slogan there never was when he sang: “If it wisnae fur yer wellies, wherewud you be?” Remember this when you’re putting your weekend look together. For long, blister-free walks add slub socks that peek out just above the boot line. A decent pair of walking boots — try Sorel — are a viable alternative.

The right anorak is also crucial. Weather resistance (think icy winds and rain) are as important as sartorial excellence so seek out styles with sizeable hoods. Generously sized pockets will bring an additional thrill to proceedings.

On the matter of what lies beneath, enjoy the freedom.

A pair of lightweight track pants with a tailored fit (NB: the moment when your legs slide out of your boots without resistance is what adulting is all about) are a whole lot more comfortable than a pair of jeans.

Layering is also a good idea. Try Uniqlo for thermal roll necks in neutral shades — layer one under your favourite sloppy knit, and relax.
