A Christmas Carol is getting a Peaky Blinders-esque makeover & it looks dark AF

A Christmas Carol has been refashioned multiple times with everyone from The Muppets to Jim Carrey having lent their talents to the classic Charles Dickens festive tale.

But A Christmas Carol has never looked as dark as this as the new trailer for the BBC drama has just been released ahead of its Christmas 2019 premiere. Under the watch of the team behind Peaky Blinders, Ebenezer Scrooge has taken an even darker turn with Guy Pearce in the role so don’t expect this to be a fluffy festive drama.

Joining Guy Pearce will be Gollum himself, Andy Serkis, as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Line of Duty’s Stephen Graham plays Jacob Marley and The Favourite’s Joe Alwyn (Taylor Swift’s boo) will play Bob Cratchit.

Peaky Blinders and Call the Midwife star Charlotte Riley will take on the role of Lottie, and the role of Mary Cratchit will be played by Doctor Who’s Vinette Robinson with Blade Runner’s Rutger Hauer at their haunting best as the Ghost of Christmas Future.

The show promises a, “unique and original take on Charles Dickens’ iconic ghost story and a haunting, hallucinatory, spine-tingling immersion into Scrooge’s dark night of the soul.”

The new 2019 version is set to add Christmas chills to the Victorian tale of evil businessman, Scrooge being visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

As the trailer was released, Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight, who is tackling the tale said: “This production of A Christmas Carol will respectfully present what we believe to be a timely interpretation of a timeless story.”

The release date of A Christmas Carol is yet to be revealed but expect to see the new drama drop this Christmas season.

Bring on the mince pies and the drama. We. Can. Not. Wait.
